50 Years Celebrated by John I and Eda Hawk

John I and Eda Sanders Hawk celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a photograph.  The photo above shows Eda in the 1960s.

Uncle Willie Sanders

Ada Meyers and William Dallas Sanders about 1935. She had fallen and broken her arm.  They lived on a farm in Christian County, IL. William Dallas was known as "Willie" and was a brother to Eda Sanders Hawk.

Census Sunday: William M Whiteside Family 1910

Lots of information about a family can be verified or discovered by looking at the census document.
In 1910, William M and Hattie Davis Whiteside were living in Niantic Township. William was older than Hattie and she had seven children, all of whom were living. Six children were still living at home and their ages are listed. (Their eldest daughter, Bernie, was already married.) William is a farmer who was born in Illinois and rents his farm.  He is 44 and Hattie is 39. They've been married 21 years (that makes 1889 the year of their marriage, so records can be found.)  Hattie would have been 18.   Their neighbors are listed, too.  The next thing to do is look at 1920! 

Dile Whiteside

Uncle Dile and Aunt Pearl Whiteside

Dile was the fourth child born to William and Hattie Whiteside.  He first married Edna Hartwig in about 1920. In February, 1924,  a newspaper article in the Decatur Review explains how Mrs. Whiteside ran away to California with George E. Wade, a laundry man, who had four kids. 

When we were young, we visited my grandmother Leva's brother,  Uncle Dile and Aunt Pearl in their East Olive home. I had no idea he had been married before, or that his first wife had left him. Imagine my surprise when I found the newspaper article!

By 1930, Dile Whiteside was boarding with Pearl Bloir at 1148 East Olive Street, who had a son Howard Bloir who was 27 and working as a checker at a lumber mill. Pearl was about 44 and was divorced from Greeley Bloir.  Dile was 36 and divorced as well.  He was a laborer at a foundry and a veteran of WW I.  

It wasn't too long until Pearl and Dile married and they continued to live in the Olive street home.

Obituary - Dile Whiteside

Dial* Whiteside, 56, of 1148 E. Olive St., died at 7:07 p.m. Tuesday after an illness of about eight months.

Mr. Whiteside, a resident of Decatur for about 40 years, retired in April after 35 years with the Wagner Castings Co.

He was born Oct. 5, 1895 in Niantic, a son of William and Hattie Davis Whiteside. He married Pearl Ryder, Aug. 2, 1929, in Decatur.

Mr. Whiteside was a veteran of World War I and a member of the Boiling Springs church of God.

He leaves his wife; sisters, Mrs. Burnie (Bernie) Mosley, Niantic, Mrs. Amelia Snelson, Decatur, and Mrs. Leva Hawk, Mechanicsburg; and a brother, Johnny, Niantic. Two brothers preceded him in death.

The body was taken to the J. J. Moran & Sons Funeral Home. Burial will be in North Fork Cemetery. Other arrangements are incomplete.

Obituary - Pearl Ryder Bloir Whiteside

Funeral services for Mrs. Dial (Perela) Whiteside will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday in the J. J. Moran & Sons Funeral Home. Burial will be in North Fork Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mrs. Whiteside, 82, of 1148 E. Olive St. was dead on arrival at Decatur and Macon County Hospital at 10:47 a.m. Friday. She had been in failing health for two years.

Mrs. Whiteside was born March 9, 1885, in Macon County, a daughter of James and Melvina Cameron Ryder. She had been a lifelong resident of the area.

She was a member of the Boiling Springs Church of God.

She married Dial Whiteside in 1926 (actually 1929) in Springfield. He died Oct. 31, 1961.

Mrs. Whiteside leaves two brothers, Jack Ryder of Decatur and Homer Ryder of Irving, Tex.; two sisters, Mrs. Wesley (Helen) Trimmer and Mrs. Verna Spencer, both of Decatur.

Mrs. Sarah Scott  Dies At Age 91!

 Formerly Lived Near Mt. Auburn, Blue Mound.

Mrs. Sarah Scott widow of Joseph M. Scott died at 4 o'clock Thursday morning at the home of her son W H Scott 438 West Wood street. She was ninety-one years old Dec. 14 (1927). Her death was due to infirmities of age.

Mrs. Scott was born m Madison county. Dee 14. 1836. and was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William M. Whiteside, pioneer settlers of Madison county. After her marriage she and her husband resided on a farm near Mt. Auburn for twenty-seven years . They then moved to Blue Mound where they resided for sixteen years. She was a member of the Christian church of Blue Mound. Mr. Scott died there seven years ago and since then she has made her home with her daughters at Blue Mound and her son in Decatur.

FOUR CHILDREN

She is survived by four children: Mrs. Alice Crow and Mrs. Mary Davidson of Blue Mound, Mrs. Minnie Davidson of Dorchester, Neb., and W H Scott of Decatur. She also leaves a brother, Samuel Whiteside of Niantic. There are fifteen grand-children and eleven great grand-children. The body was taken to  Dawson & Wikoff, funeral directors. and prepared for burial. The funeral will be held at 11 o'clock Saturday forenoon at the Christian church in Blue Mound. The burial will be in the Hall cemetery.

Samuel W Whiteside married his second wife, Sarah Jane Hedrick Mosely in 1895. Sarah was the mother-in-law of his eldest granddaughter, Bernie Malley Whiteside Mosely (Mrs. Jay).  There were no children between Sarah and Samuel, although each had children with other spouses.

As can be seen from the article, it was a busy time in court in Macon County!

William M. Whiteside died on or about 4 September 1864.

The Petition shows that his real and personal estate consisted chiefly of money and notes being worth about Two Thousand dollars.  Surviving him are his children: Nancy J Bush, Sarah Scott, S. W. Whiteside, A. W. Whiteside, Elvira Allinson, Eliza Whiteside, Lenora Whiteside and William Whiteside.

William Modrel Whiteside was born 7 Nov 1812 in Madison County, Illinois, which was mostly the southern half of the state. The son of General Samuel A. Whiteside and Nancy Miller Whiteside, he married Elmira "Mirey" Owens 15 February 1834.

William and Mirey had at least the following children:

William Modrel owned  land in Niantic Township, Macon county, Illinois and paid taxes on 145 acres in 1865. In 1866, his holdings had increased to 165 acres. He left a fair sized estate to his surviving heirs: Eliza, Nancy Bush, Sarah Scott, Leonora J Crichenot, William, Alvira Allinson, Addison and Samuel W.Whiteside.

William and Mirey are buried in the Old Section of Long Point Cemetery, Niantic, Macon county, Illinois.  The tall spire has an inscription for William on one side and for "Mirey" on the other.

Samuel Whiteside an Old Pioneer

Samuel Whiteside came to Macon County, Illinois, at the age of 16, about 1856. He raised and sold horses between Niantic and Belleville, Illinois. He was a member of Berea Christian Church, Mosquito Township, Christian Co., Illinois, in 1914.

Samuel W. Whiteside

Samuel W. Whiteside, formerly of East St. Louis, died at 3 o'clock Saturday morning at the home of his son, W.M. Whiteside, rural route 1, south of Niantic.
He was ninety -two years old in February. He had been in failing health for the last year, but until a few months ago was able to be up and around. His death was due to complications incident to old age.
Mr. Whiteside was born near East St. Louis February 22, 1839. For the last three years he has been making his home with his son near Niantic. He was a member of the Long Point Christian Church. He is survived by three children, W.M. Whiteside and Mrs. Nora Jane Dodson, Niantic, and Mrs. Emma Blankenship, Moweaqua. There are thirteen grandchildren. The body was taken to the Moran & Sons funeral home, where friends may call after 5 o'clock Saturday evening.
The funeral will be held at 1 :30 o'clock Monday afternoon at the Long Point Church, conducted by Rev. H. H. Jenner of Niantic. The burial will be in the Long Point cemetery.

 

Probate #8367  in Macon County, Illinois shows heirs of Samuel W Whiteside to be his son, William M Whiteside, his daughters Nora Dotson and Emma Blankinship.  John B. Faris was the executor of the estate. Samuel W Whiteside died on the 28th of March, 1931.

 

William Modrel Whiteside was born 3 December 1866 and died 2 August 1940. This is a listing of his heirs from Probate No. 10569 which was processed in Macon County, Illinois.  He was the son of Samuel William Whiteside (1839-1931) and Elizabeth Lewis..

Jacob Lewis was born in Macon county, Illinois.
He was married on the 21st of October in 1841 to Jane Cochran in St. Louis, Missouri. They lived in St. Clair County, Illinois until about 1860.

Jacob and Jane had the following children:
Elizabeth (b. 1843), John, Sarah, Catherine, Mary (b. 1848 m.Wm. Hignight, d. 1927), Jacob Jr., Malinda, Samuel, William, Charles, James, Cintha and Winnette (b. 1867)

His daughter Elizabeth married Samuel W. Whiteside in 1860 in Macon county, Illinois. His wife, Jane, died in 1868 in Macon County, Illinois.

Jacob married Harriet Little in St. Louis, Missouri, on 11 Oct. 1870. They lived in Turnback, Lawrence, Missouri, in 1880. One child, Charles was born in 1881 and later lived in Macon County, Illinois in the home of his sister, Elizabeth.

David Hawk and his son, George William, came from the part of Pennsylvania where the Conestoga wagons were built in Lancaster County to Niantic, Illinois in 1842 at age 32. They are listed on the 1840 census, in separate households. David died not long after they came to Illinois, in 1844, and was buried on the old Jacobs place in Macon County. George's mother, whose name is unknown, is supposed to have died in Pennsylvania before 1842. They settled south of Niantic, Illinois.

Ohio, USA. She died on 26 Sep 1886 in Macon, Illinois, USA.

George Hawk, known as Bill, is listed as a founding member of Macon County in the History of
Macon County. George's mother, whose name is unknown, is supposed to have died in Pennsylvania before 1842.
George William Hawk and Rebecca Penelope Templin had the following children:

i. REBECCA J HAWK was born on 18 Apr 1835 in Ohio, USA. She died on 03 Jul 1911
in Missouri, USA. She married Hugh. James WOODS. He was born in Missouri, and died there.

2. ii. JOHN ARMSTRONG HAWK was born on 10 Mar 1837 in Fayette, Ohio, USA. He died on 18 Dec 1910 in Niantic, Macon, Illinois, USA. He married SARAH ELLEN FARIS on 26 Feb 1863 in Decatur, Macon, Illinois, USA, daughter of Eli Shelby Faris and Lucilla Pulliam. She was born on 18 Jul 1845 in New Market, Highland, Ohio, USA.
She died on 19 Jun 1923 in Niantic, Macon, Illinois, USA.

3. iii. ADEN CLEVENGER HAWK was born on 19 Aug 1839 in Lafayette, Tippecanoe, Indiana, USA. He died on 01 Nov 1918 in Niantic, Macon, Illinois, USA. He married
AMY CATHERINE CASS BLANKINSHIP on 06 Nov 1862 in Macon, Illinois, USA,daughter of Joseph T. Blankinship and Amy R. Ridgway. She was born on 20 June 1842 in Ohio, USA. She died on 13 Apr 1928 in Harristown, Macon, Illinois, USA.

4. iv. JAMES MADISON HAWK was born on 28 Nov 1841. He died on 28 Dec 1930 in Springfield, Sangamon, Illinois, USA. He married LAURA O FOSTER on 24 Mar 1887 in Macon County Illinois, USA (second marriage for Laura), daughter of
Robert Foster and Mary Ann Barnett. She was born on 02 Mar 1853 in Illinois, USA. She died on 12 Feb 1922 in Springfield, Sangamon, Illinois, USA. James is buried at Camp Butler in Springfield.

v. GEORGE WILLIAM HAWK II was born in 1844 in Niantic, Macon, Illinois, USA. He died on 11 Oct 1864 in Niantic, Macon, Illinois, USA.

After G. W.'s death, his widow, "Nellie"(Rebecca Penelope) married Nathan Averitt and they had a child: Laura Averitt, b.29 May 1854, Niantic, Macon, IL.

PENELOPE TEMPLIN HAWK AVERITT

SEPTEMBER 26, 1886

Mrs. Penlope Averitt was born in Fayette County, Ohio, November 15th, 1813. She was the daughter of Isaac Templin, one of the early settlers of that state and a devoted member of the Presbyterian Church. She was married at the age of eighteen to William Hawk, with whom she emigrated to Macon County when Decatur was a village, and when no railroad was in the county, settling in Niantic township. Death deprived her of her husband in 1848, and in 1852 she was married to Elder Nathan G. Averitt, of the Christian church, with whom she lived till March 6, 1867, when she was again left a widow.

In 1846 under the ministration of Elder Watt. Bowels, of the Christian church, she became a member of that denomination, and has remained a zealous member ever since, embracing a period of forty years.

Her death occurred in Niantic, Illinois, September 26, 1886, at the age of seventy-three years. The funeral services were held in the Christian Church at Niantic, September 27, Rev. A. C. Foster officiating, and the remains were laid to rest in Long Point Cemetery.

Mrs. Averitt has resided in Niantic for eighteen years where she was known by every one. She leaves three sons and one daughter, residents of the township, and a daughter living in Iowa, to mourn her death.
